A case of hepatitis A has been confirmed in a food handler working at the Main Deck restaurant located in Yates County, New York. Customers who consumed food and drinks prepared by the restaurant between April 4-12, 2024 are urged to get vaccinated as soon as possible. The New York State Department of Health has requested neighboring counties to make residents aware of the situation and take necessary precautions.

"If you consumed food and/or drinks prepared by the Main Deck restaurant between March 27- April 12, 2024, watch for any symptoms of hepatitis A," advised health officials. Symptoms can include fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, dark urine, joint pain, or jaundice. It is important to seek medical attention if any symptoms appear, as hepatitis A is a contagious liver disease that can take 2 to 7 weeks after exposure before symptoms start to appear.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend vaccination as the best way to prevent hepatitis A. The Chautauqua County Health Department has vaccines available, and residents are encouraged to consult their doctors, primary care providers, or pharmacies for more information on receiving the vaccine.

For those who have questions or wish to schedule an appointment for a free hepatitis A vaccine, the Chautauqua County Health Department can be contacted at 716-753-4491. More information about hepatitis A can be found on the websites of the New York State Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Chautauqua County Health Department, a leading Public Health organization in the county, is dedicated to supporting the community's health through innovative approaches, technical assistance to partner organizations, and various programs and services aimed at preventing disease and promoting overall health and wellness.

Residents are encouraged to take the necessary steps to protect their health and well-being in light of this recent hepatitis A case.
