Chautauqua County commemorated Earth Day with a strong call to action for recycling, emphasizing the importance of preserving the planet's resources and protecting its ecosystems. Aaron Gustafson, Deputy Director of the Chautauqua County Department of Public Facilities, highlighted the critical role of recycling, stating, "There are many reasons to recycle." Gustafson pointed out that recycling offers various benefits such as waste reduction, pollution prevention, natural resource conservation, energy conservation, and job creation.

Gustafson stressed, "It is everyone's responsibility to steward our world." He urged individuals to play their part in protecting and preserving the environment for future generations. Chautauqua County provides multiple recycling options for residents through its Division of Solid Waste, with four transfer station locations conveniently located across the county.

Residents can access recycling services at the North County Transfer Station in Fredonia, the South County Transfer Station in Falconer, the West County Transfer Station in Sherman, and the Ellery Transfer Station in Jamestown. These stations accept a variety of recyclable materials, including cardboard, paper, plastic, scrap metal, clothing, glass, propane tanks, freon-containing items, tires, and electronics (except at the Ellery Transfer Station).

However, the Department emphasized that certain items like used motor oil and rechargeable batteries cannot be accepted at these facilities. Residents were advised to contact local service stations or auto parts stores for used motor oil disposal and return rechargeable batteries to retailers. Disposing of rechargeable batteries in the garbage was discouraged to prevent environmental harm.

As Earth Day was celebrated, the county encouraged everyone to reaffirm their commitment to recycling and environmental stewardship. The collective effort in recycling can make a significant difference in preserving the beauty and integrity of the planet.
